The Essence of Your "Why"
Your "why" is the deep-rooted reason behind your actions and aspirations. It's the driving force that sparks your passion, clarifies your purpose, and motivates you to work towards your goals. While the goals themselves provide direction, your "why" gives them meaning and significance. While on vacation at Disney World, I recently experienced a powerful realization that having a very specific "why" can make all the difference.
The Impact of a Clear and Specific "Why"
1.Maintaining Motivation: When the going gets tough, it's easy to lose sight of your goals and succumb to doubt or fatigue (after all, we're just humans with human brains, right?). However, a clear and specific "why" serves as a constant source of motivation, reminding you of the deeper purpose behind your plan. It taps into your emotions, stirs your determination, and renews your commitment, even in the face of adversity.
2. Staying Focused: With distractions and competing priorities, staying focused on your goals can be challenging. However, when you define your SPECIFIC "why," it acts as a guiding light, helping you prioritize your efforts and stay on course. It enables you to filter out distractions, make aligned decisions, and channel your energy towards what truly matters.
3. Succeeding in Your Goals: Success is not just about achieving the goal; it's about fulfillment and meaningful progress. A clear and specific "why" fuels sustained effort and resilience, increasing your chances of reaching your desired outcomes. It fosters a sense of purpose-driven action, turning obstacles into opportunities for growth and learning.
Finding Strength in Purpose - The Power of a More Specific "Why"
A few months ago I realized with all the working, entrepreneur-ing, moming, and adulting, I was sliding down the slippery slope of becoming less and less physically active. 🥴 I made a commitment to improve my physical strength, motivated by a desire to be a “fit mama” for my littles (i.e. my "why"). I don’t really love exercising, 🤮 so it’s been feeling like a bit of a struggle to maintain my workouts.
A simple yet powerful moment over this weekend immediately shifted my perspective. My husband and I took our kiddos to Disney: 3 day park hopper. 😵💫O.M.G.
My daughter wanted to be carried….a lot….by me, NOT her strong Dad. In that moment, I realized that carrying my 50 pound child is my true "why." It's not just about being physically fit; it's about having the strength and stamina to squat down and stand up with 50 pounds, to carry 50 [tired] pounds around the park, 💪 and to be able to do it all over again in 20 years when my sweet little daughter needs me to carry HER babies around the park.
My "why" transformed my efforts from mere exercise routines to meaningful acts of love and connection.
THIS is the power of mindset work: getting clear on your why and using it to support you through hard things.
Embracing Your "Why"
So, how can you define your "why" and benefit from its power in your own life?
Reflect on Your Values: Consider what truly matters to you and aligns with your core values. Your "why" should resonate deeply with who you are and what you stand for.
Identify Your Passions: What are you passionate about? What drives your curiosity and enthusiasm? Your "why" should tap into your passions and ignite your inner fire.
Be Specific and Tangible: Avoid vague or abstract goals (eh-hem: "be a fit mama"). Instead, define your "why" in concrete terms that evoke emotion and visualization. Make it something you can see, feel, and connect with on a personal level. (Carrying my child around a theme park)
Revisit and Refine: Your "why" may evolve over time as you grow and change. Regularly revisit and refine it to ensure it remains aligned with your aspirations and values.
So, my friends, take the time to uncover your "why" and let it guide you towards the life you desire and deserve.
